OC San Relies on Stem's AI-driven Energy Storage for 24/7 Operations

Orange County Sanitation District (OC San), a public wastewater agency serving about 2.6 million people in central and northwest Orange County, needed to keep 24/7 operations running reliably while reducing facility energy imports and managing changing interconnection requirements at its Fountain Valley plant. To support this challenge, OC San turned to Stem’s AI-driven energy storage and Athena smart energy storage software.

Stem implemented a 4.95 MW / 32.56 MWh battery energy storage system that helps manage OC San’s load, optimize utility bills, and support demand response through Southern California Edison’s Local Capacity Requirements program. The solution has enabled near-zero power import during peak periods at Plant 1, improved resilience for both facilities, and delivered multiple value streams including demand savings, revenue from available plant demand, peak shaving during cogeneration shutdowns, and SGIP funding.
