A Stem Case Study
Gap Inc., the global apparel retailer targeting 100% renewable energy across its owned facilities by 2030, needed to cut rising facility energy costs at its Fresno, CA distribution center and at a Brampton, Ontario site. The company engaged Stem, deploying Stem’s Athena® software to operate an existing 1MW/1.8MWh battery system (operational August 2018) and to pursue a new 3.8MWh installation to address volatile demand charges.
Stem integrated and took over operation of the Fresno system, using Athena to automate demand-charge management and energy arbitrage, delivering about $60K in annual savings, and is designing and financing a 3.8MWh Ontario system under a shared-savings model with no upfront cost. Stem’s combined software, deployment expertise, and financing approach is expected to maximize utility-bill savings over a 15-year lifetime and support Gap Inc.’s broader sustainability goals.
