Global Building Materials Leader Finds Effortless Savings with AI-Powered Storage

Saint-Gobain, a global building materials leader, operates a 230,000 sq. ft. plastics plant in Garden Grove, CA with energy‑intensive equipment and large shift-start demand spikes that drive high utility bills. To avoid disrupting production while cutting costs, Saint‑Gobain turned to Stem and its energy storage service powered by Athena, the AI that optimizes storage and grid interaction.

Stem deployed a 500 kW / 1000 kWh battery system (operational July 2018) managed by Athena to pre‑emptively shave demand peaks, participate in demand response, and optimize utility bills with no operational interruption or capital outlay. The solution gave Saint‑Gobain deeper energy insight, additional revenue from grid signals, and an expected $285K in savings over 10 years.
