Deploying Groundbreaking Solar plus Storage Projects in New York

DSD Renewables, a developer and owner of large-scale solar PV and storage projects, needed an expert storage partner to deploy some of the first front-of-meter, DC-coupled solar-plus-storage systems in New York—projects that carried engineering risks (a single failure could impact both solar and storage) and faced changing fire-code requirements. To address these challenges DSD partnered with Stem, leveraging Stem’s Solar Plus Storage solutions and Athena® smart energy storage software along with VDER tariff optimization.

Stem provided in-depth engineering, deployment support, and personalized training to ensure reliability, compliance, and fast project execution. As a result, the site—optimized by Stem’s Athena—delivers 4.5 MW of solar plus 2.5 MW / 10 MWh of storage (solar COD April 2021; ESS COD December 2021), is positioned to earn wholesale market revenues under New York’s VDER tariff, accelerated DSD’s storage integration, and delivers measurable system benefits including energy storage, demand reduction, locational system relief, and environmental value.
