Boston Properties Advances Sustainability While Getting a Financial Return with Stem

Boston Properties, the largest publicly traded developer, owner and manager of Class A office properties in the U.S. and a recognized sustainability leader, wanted to leverage energy storage to advance its sustainability goals while also earning a financial return. Boston Properties engaged Stem for a turnkey solution to identify and deploy the right energy storage opportunity at a flagship Santa Monica office complex.

Stem oversaw installation and operation of a 2.1MW / 3.7MWh indoor lithium‑ion energy storage system (the largest indoor system in the U.S.) and uses its Athena software to dispatch batteries for demand response and utility bill optimization. Stem’s solution reduces demand charges, shifts load to cleaner, lower‑cost energy, supports the grid during stress, and delivers a guaranteed $1.9M in savings over 10 years while helping the local utility cut emissions.
