A Stem Case Study
The Utility-Scale Storage Developer, owner of a 100 MW / 2‑hour lithium‑ion project in Eastern Texas (ERCOT), was facing unexpected ESREDP non‑compliance driven by incorrect state‑of‑charge reporting and rapid discharge derating when unbalanced DC blocks and offline strings reduced available power. The Developer engaged Stem for Performance Engineering & Reporting services to diagnose why the plant was failing to meet dispatched power and incurring ERCOT charges.
Using proprietary analytics and a consultative approach, Stem reevaluated passive and active balancing routines, confirmed LFP block calibration, recalculated EMS power availability, and optimized dispatch signal distribution with the EMS provider. Stem’s work produced immediate, measurable improvements — improved ESREDP calculations, tighter state‑of‑charge balancing, reduced plant‑wide catch‑up/offline balancing, and restored the 100 MW / 2‑hour project’s ability to meet dispatch — enabling continued operation since Summer 2021 as one of Texas’s largest standalone lithium‑ion storage assets providing Ancillary Services, ECRS, FFR and Day‑Ahead/Real‑Time energy.
