University of Alabama Is Able to Run Innovative Vital Signs Capturing Software Without Buying New SANs Thanks to StarWind

The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine — a large clinical and academic unit within one of the country’s biggest hospitals — needed to deploy innovative vital‑signs capturing software but faced split IT infrastructure across hospital and campus networks using Hyper‑V. The existing hospital SAN was too slow to host the new application and buying a new SAN was prohibitively expensive.

UAB implemented StarWind Virtual SAN to repurpose faster disks in its Hyper‑V datacenters into a virtual shared storage pool, avoiding a costly SAN purchase. The change delivered the required performance, higher uptime and redundancy, and allowed the vital‑signs software to run properly while improving overall IT efficiency.
