Mine Canadian Malartic ensures real-time data synchronization with StarWind Virtual SAN

Mine Canadian Malartic, a gold‑mining partnership in Malartic, Québec with 1,500 employees, ran 900 user PCs and about 100 virtual servers on VMware ESXi across two SANs and eight cold storage units. Existing VMware vSphere Replication and SRM only synchronized data every 15 minutes to 24 hours and left storage as a single point of failure, so the company needed an affordable shared‑storage solution to enable real‑time synchronization with its disaster‑recovery site and eliminate downtime during maintenance (VMware vSAN proved too costly).

The company deployed StarWind Virtual SAN (VSAN), which mirrors data, caches and I/O controllers across independent hosts to remove the SPOF and provide real‑time replication between two sites. The solution delivered continuous high availability and fault tolerance, letting Mine Canadian Malartic perform updates and upgrades with no production downtime — “StarWind works 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,” according to a company representative.
