A StarWind Software Case Study
LightChange, a technology services provider that supports customers from small offices to ISPs, needed a true high-availability solution for an ISP client whose two Hyper-V clusters relied on a single Dell EqualLogic SAN that replicated off-site every five minutes. That design risked up to five minutes of data loss in a DR event and made mapping existing VMs to replicated iSCSI volumes tedious, so LightChange sought a real-time HA option for geographically disparate back-end storage.
They deployed StarWind Virtual SAN and moved the front-end to VMware vSphere with a single vCenter, turning two previously under‑utilized SANs into an active, RAID1‑style HA storage pool with StarWind servers at each site and fully redundant fiber links. Every host gained dual iSCSI paths to both StarWind nodes; failure tests (host, StarWind server, and SAN individually and simultaneously) showed zero downtime and fast resynchronization, enabling a unified 100% HA environment and repurposing existing hardware without costly proprietary gear.
