Preview of the Fortum Case Study

Fortum advances 1 MW hydrogen production with Stargate Hydrogen for late-2025 launch

Fortum, a Nordic energy company, aimed to advance its power-to-x (P2X) initiatives and decarbonize industrial processes. To support this goal, Fortum launched a pilot project at its Kalla test center in Finland to gain experience with hydrogen production. The company selected Stargate Hydrogen as a vendor to supply its Gateway200 electrolyser system for this project, which would allow Fortum to test and compare different technologies.

Stargate Hydrogen provided its innovative electrolyser technology, which was already proven in similar Nordic conditions at a reference project in Estonia. The solution implemented for Fortum involves a 1 MW electrolyser system currently in the installation phase. The outcome of the project is that the first hydrogen production is expected by the end of December 2025. This pilot will provide Fortum with valuable data on safety, performance, and operational flexibility to guide its future commercial-scale P2X plants.
