SpringerMaterials Accelerates Research With Smart Search

Springer Nature needed a more flexible, scalable data infrastructure for SpringerMaterials, its large materials science database, so it could better handle growing data sources and deliver smarter search across complex scientific content. The existing XML document store and keyword-based setup was becoming difficult to maintain and was slowing down release cycles as demand and data volume increased. Stardog provided the knowledge graph platform used to support the next-generation search and data foundation.

With Stardog’s knowledge graph, Springer Nature unified diverse data sources into a single model and enabled intelligent search, context-aware results, entity exploration, reverse search, and fast querying. The platform went live in 18 months and now spans 100 million triples, supports quarterly updates, and delivers sub-second query performance. The result is a unified view of more than 290,000 materials for 50,000 users, helping researchers find accurate information faster and integrate materials data more easily into their workflows.
