The National Cancer Institute needed a way to make sense of increasingly narrow, unlinked oncology concepts that were slowing research as the field expanded. It turned to Stardog to help manage the National Cancer Institute Thesaurus (NCIt), a rich biomedical data model connecting hundreds of thousands of relationships, definitions, concepts, terms, synonyms, and external data.

Using Stardog’s native scalability, the NCI could seamlessly add and modify large volumes of monthly updates to NCIt without disrupting the underlying architecture. The result was a widely adopted standard for coding and reference in medical communities worldwide, supporting critical decisions by government agencies, hospitals, and public health institutes.
