A Stamen Case Study
MPG Ranch, a 15,000-acre ranch specializing in habitat restoration and ecological research, faced the challenge of predicting the second-order impacts of conservation efforts on its ecosystem. They partnered with Stamen to create an interface for a new ecological model, with the goal of visualizing how reintroducing one species could have unanticipated effects on all others.
Stamen implemented a solution centered on fuzzy cognitive mapping, a multi-relationship technique for understanding complex ecological systems. The resulting tool, MPG Matrix, was designed to broaden its audience with an emphasis on students, from middle schoolers to graduate researchers. The work by Stamen provides a powerful predictive model to help wildlife managers and policy-makers make more informed decisions by understanding the complicated implications of any action on an ecosystem.
