A Stack Overflow Case Study
Primer is a San Francisco–based machine learning startup that helps clients surface key insights from large document sets. As Primer scaled (having raised $54.7M) its cross-functional team — with people from CS, biology, and economics — struggled to capture institutional knowledge: repeated questions, siloed repos, and Slack conversations made onboarding and cross-team collaboration slow. To address this, Primer evaluated and adopted Stack Overflow’s private offering, Stack Overflow for Teams.
Primer’s DevOps manager rolled out Stack Overflow for Teams and integrated it with Slack, nudging engineers to build a searchable knowledge base that grew organically. Using Stack Overflow for Teams, Primer can tag experts (for example, spotting contributors who’ve answered 27 questions on a topic), spot technology trends, and dramatically speed ramp-up time — the company estimates Teams has saved employees hundreds of hours — while improving development velocity and cross-team knowledge sharing.
