A Stack Overflow Case Study
Expensify, a flat-structured company that encourages engineers to pick their own projects, struggled with fragmented and hard-to-find documentation that left developers relying on ad-hoc conversations, GitHub issues, and Slack messages. To solve onboarding and knowledge-sharing gaps, the team adopted a private Stack Overflow for Teams from Stack Overflow.
Stack Overflow implemented a private, searchable Q&A site integrated with Slack so engineers could ask, answer, and vote on solutions within Expensify’s codebase; this centralized repository reduced reliance on tribal knowledge and sped onboarding. As a result, Expensify engineers estimate they save two to three hours per week previously spent hunting down answers, and use of Stack Overflow has expanded beyond engineering to customer support and people success teams.
