Ingalls Shipbuilding cuts shipbuilding costs with SSI through 3D CAD-PLM integration

Ingalls Shipbuilding, a major builder of ships for the U.S. Government, faced immense pressure to reduce costs after the government moved to fixed-price contracts. The shipyard struggled with inefficient information management across hundreds of disparate databases and files. To address this, Ingalls sought a Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) solution integrated with its CAD/CAM software and turned to vendor SSI for a solution.

SSI implemented an integrated solution using its ShipConstructor CAD/CAM software and EnterprisePlatform to connect with the Aras Innovator PLM system. This agile and flexible approach was uniquely suited for shipbuilding, allowing for a staggered implementation that did not disrupt ongoing operations. The result was an end-to-end solution that optimized data, enabled 3D planning, and supported concurrent engineering, leading to significant cost savings and major operational efficiencies for Ingalls.
