Incat Crowther streamlines 7-ferry design with SSI and mixed reality

Incat Crowther, a global leader in naval architecture, faced significant challenges in designing seven ferries for the Parramatta River. The project required seamless multi-stakeholder collaboration, strict adherence to existing vessel designs to avoid new crew training, and the ability to validate customization requests in real-time. To address this, they worked with vendor SSI and utilized solutions including SSI ShipConstructor.

SSI provided a solution centered on creating a 3D digital ship model and integrating it with Microsoft HoloLens for mixed reality. This allowed for real-time design validation, enhanced collaboration across locations, and precise construction verification by overlaying virtual models onto physical ships. The results included reduced design iterations, minimized errors, and a significantly shortened project timeline. SSI's technology also enabled future-ready training and maintenance using the accurate digital twin.
