Zalando Runs Mission-Critical Workloads on Spot Instances with Spotinst

Zalando, a major European e-commerce fashion platform, faced the challenge of rising cloud infrastructure costs across its vast operations. They wanted to utilize cost-effective Amazon EC2 Spot instances but were concerned about the short termination notice and the risk of cluster-wide failures causing application downtime. They turned to the vendor Spot (Spotinst) and its Elastigroup service for a solution.

Spotinst's Elastigroup provided a solution with predictive termination notices, automatic fallback to On-Demand instances, and support for stateful workloads like Cassandra. This allowed Zalando to achieve significant cost savings and guarantee application reliability. The solution integrated seamlessly with their existing tools, enabling a successful company-wide rollout across over 200 teams and 300 AWS accounts, letting them focus less on infrastructure and more on their customers.
