TuneIn lowers cloud costs and increases visibility into cloud spending with Spot amazon web services container workloads

TuneIn, the live streaming and on-demand audio service with more than 75 million monthly active users, moved its applications from data centers to AWS after outages made physical infrastructure harder to manage. But cloud bills rose above prior hosting costs, and TuneIn’s teams lacked a reliable way to understand and allocate spending across Kubernetes, EC2, ECS, and other cloud services. With no dedicated FinOps team and inconsistent instance usage across workloads, the company needed better cost control and visibility.

Spot provided TuneIn with Ocean and Spot Eco to optimize Kubernetes workloads using spot and reserved instances while maintaining reliability and high availability. With Spot, TuneIn reduced more than 25% of its entire AWS bill, achieved over 40% savings on Reserved Instances, and gained granular cost visibility down to namespace, deployment, pod, and even cost per stream. The team also used Spot’s flexibility to temporarily scale Reserved Instances up by more than 340% over 11 days, then reduce them again in three days once testing was complete.
