The Data Place Leverages Spotinst's GKE Support To Reduce Costs By Over 70%

The Data Place is a UK social enterprise that builds low-cost open-data infrastructure and wanted to reduce and optimize the costs of running its Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) workloads. To address this, The Data Place trialed Spot and its Elastigroup solution to explore running GKE on Preemptible VMs and improve instance utilization without added management overhead.

Spot’s Elastigroup integrated with The Data Place’s Google account and handled cluster provisioning, automatically using Preemptible VMs and a Kubernetes Autoscaler to spin up right-sized instances for pending pods. The result was a dramatic cost reduction—GKE costs fell by over 70%—plus continuous instance optimization and a rapid, hours-long deployment supported by Spot.
