How Walla!News Utilized Spotinst To Optimize Cost Weeks After Migrating To The Cloud

Walla!News, a leading Israeli online publisher, moved its 23‑year on‑premise operation to AWS ECS to gain agility but immediately faced operational and cost challenges. After the migration their clusters experienced unhealthy instances during traffic spikes and they struggled to fully utilize Reserved Instances across accounts. To tackle these issues they turned to Spot (Spotinst/Elastigroup) for cloud cost and reliability optimization.

Spot implemented ECS Auto‑Healing to monitor and automatically replace failed agents, enabled cross‑account flexible RI utilization with Normalized Factor Units for clearer visibility, and migrated 100% of Walla!News’s ECS clusters to Spot Instances using Elastigroup. They also deployed Spot’s ECS Auto‑scaler and infrastructure‑aware scheduler to better pack tasks and scale instances. The result: full RI utilization, clusters running entirely on Spot Instances after the POC, improved resilience, and an expected 50% reduction in data processing costs once Spot’s Multi‑Load Balancer is in use.
