An Automatic And Reliable Solution For Managing Spot Instances

Rungway, a startup that helps employees share expertise via a dedicated smartphone app, faced rising AWS EC2 on‑demand costs and instability when managing Spot Instances themselves—instances were frequently terminated and required custom scripts to handle replacements. Seeking an automatic, reliable solution, Rungway turned to Spot and its Elastigroup product to manage Spot Instance usage.

Spot implemented Elastigroup integration with Amazon ECS to safely drain and replace Spot-backed EC2 hosts (invoking deregisterContainerInstance so tasks are rescheduled), allowing Rungway to keep its existing microservices architecture unchanged. Using Spot, Rungway reduced EC2 costs by about 80%—saving tens of thousands of dollars—while maintaining performance, avoiding downtime risk, and completing the configuration in just a few days.
