A Splunk Case Study
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), a research university serving about 29,000 students, needed to maintain reliable IT infrastructure while also improving student retention and academic outcomes. IT already used machine data for operations, and researchers sought to repurpose learning management system (Blackboard) clickstream data to identify at‑risk students and intervene early.
UNLV deployed Splunk Enterprise with the Machine Learning Toolkit to index LMS logs, build predictive models, and deliver early, personalized feedback; more than 1,000 students flagged as at risk received interventions within the first four weeks and one‑third of those went on to earn an A or B. The platform also sped IT troubleshooting, extended help‑desk hours by 30 weekly hours without extra staff, and enhanced campus security and operational readiness.
