University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Gains Deep Insight Into Mission-Critical Applications

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC‑CH), a large public research university with 29,000+ students and over 100,000 connected devices across 300+ buildings, needed better visibility and control of its complex campus network and mission‑critical applications (PeopleSoft, Exchange, Active Directory). ITS faced fragmented logs, slow troubleshooting, limited safe access to production data, and a need for campus‑wide monitoring and self‑service tools to reduce downtime and support operational decision‑making.

UNC‑CH deployed Splunk Enterprise with forwarders on PeopleSoft and other systems, built dashboards and a shared portal, and created tools like an account‑lockout investigator to enable near‑real‑time monitoring and self‑service diagnostics. The implementation simplified interdependencies, provided distributed, safe access to machine data for 400+ users, accelerated investigations, saved hundreds of hours annually, and improved system availability and user satisfaction.
