QUT Gains Operational Visibility Into Mission-Critical Systems to Lead in Big Data Scholarship

Queensland University of Technology (QUT), a leading Australian university, needed a scalable big-data platform to manage huge, diverse datasets from its student and academic systems (SAMS), portals and numerous services. The challenge was to gain deep operational visibility, enable root-cause and anomaly analysis, support a wide range of academic and IT users, and provide a foundation for teaching and researching big data.

QUT deployed Splunk Enterprise to ingest roughly 200 GB of data daily and index more than 50 billion log entries, consolidating data from applications, infrastructure, security controls and sensors into a single pane of glass. The solution delivered real-time alerts, dashboards and analytics, allowed retirement of legacy systems, reduced risk and costs, and created a dedicated instance for teaching—helping staff, students and researchers make data-driven decisions.
