A Splunk Case Study
RIC One is a collaborative project run by New York’s 12 Regional Information Centers (RICs) under BOCES that delivers secure, standardized data and single sign-on services to school districts. The team faced the challenge of unifying logs and monitoring a distributed technology stack—deployed across AWS and local RIC infrastructures—while protecting sensitive student data and eliminating time-consuming manual data entry and administration.
The RIC One team implemented Splunk Cloud and Splunk Enterprise (with the Splunk App for AWS) for centralized log management, proactive alerts and dashboards, alongside an API and RIC One LOGIN for consistent data access and SSO. The solution reduced manual processes, preserved student privacy, enabled a small statewide team to operate efficiently, lowered costs through a cloud-first approach, and produced measurable uptake (e.g., ~12,000 authentications to 36 apps in 30 days) that improved district operations and visibility.
