Nevada Department of Transportation Bolsters Security and Operational Efficiencies

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), which manages the state’s highways, 511 traveler information system and a statewide traffic camera network, needed better reporting and visibility into web activity and network traffic. Manual log reviews were tedious, unreliable and too slow to counter time-critical security risks, and the information security officer was concerned about repeated hacking attempts and widespread misconfigurations across devices.

By deploying Splunk Enterprise and centralizing logs from traffic systems, servers, routers, FTP and Active Directory, NDOT gained immediate operational visibility and automated root-cause analysis. The platform revealed misconfigurations, stopped an overseas intrusion attempt on a newly installed firewall, uncovered a faulty FTP script and diagnosed video-feed and printer issues—delivering a stronger security posture, faster issue resolution, cost savings, improved resource management and enhanced public safety as NDOT expands monitoring to 511, helpdesk and databases.
