Hong Kong’s Vessel Traffic Center Gains Real-Time Port Operations Visibility

The Marine Department (MD) of the Hong Kong Government operates the Vessel Traffic Center (VTC) to manage safe port operations. Operators formerly had to juggle radar and other electronic systems, an MIS and paper records across four monitoring sectors, creating labor‑intensive, error‑prone workflows, slow vessel tracking and potential delays in traffic monitoring.

Since deploying Splunk Enterprise in 2016, MD consolidated real‑time radar and AIS streams and other logs into a single analytics platform, automating vessel identification and tracking and reducing tracking time from tens of minutes to seconds. The system provides end‑to‑end visibility and paperless workflows, improving navigation safety and operational efficiency and enabling faster incident detection and cross‑region data sharing.
