A Splunk Case Study
Manitoba Hydro, the provincially owned electric and natural gas utility serving hundreds of thousands of customers across Manitoba, faced mission-critical messaging challenges during its move from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010. With 6,300 employees and a distributed environment of more than two dozen Exchange servers plus Blackberry and security appliances, the messaging team relied on multiple legacy tools and scripts that were costly to maintain and slow to troubleshoot.
By deploying Splunk Enterprise and the Splunk App for Microsoft Exchange, Manitoba Hydro centralized indexing, search, alerting and reporting across its messaging and security systems. The solution eliminated several legacy tools (avoiding about $50,000 in licensing/maintenance over five years), enabled rich dashboards and automated alerts, sped troubleshooting from hours to minutes, and supported public-folder cleanup and custom support apps for faster user problem resolution.
