Case Study: SpaceChain achieves secure, scalable blockchain-in-space deployments with Spire

A Spire Case Study

Preview of the SpaceChain Case Study

Spire and SpaceChain on a mission to prove blockchain technology in space, and take digital currency security to the next level

SpaceChain, a Singapore-based pioneer founded in 2017 building a decentralized satellite infrastructure (DSI), needed to add an extra layer of security and global scale to its blockchain-in-space applications—specifically a satellite-based multisignature wallet and secure crypto transactions. They partnered with Spire, leveraging Spire’s Brain in Space initiative, software-as-a-service model and on-orbit compute capabilities (including the SABERTOOTH supercomputing module and Spire’s LEMUR platform) to run and protect their payloads in Low Earth Orbit.

Spire uploaded SpaceChain’s blockchain-enabled payload to its growing constellation of more than 100 satellites and later hosted a larger software load on a Spire LEMUR launched in January 2022; the software handed to Spire on 24 September 2021 was live on Spire satellites in less than a month. The result: a validated, scalable path for SpaceChain’s DSI and the world’s first blockchain transaction in space, end-to-end encrypted data flows with ownership retained by SpaceChain, faster time-to-orbit for applications and clear commercial momentum for satellite-based blockchain services.
