Case Study: OroraTech achieves global, near-real-time wildfire detection and monitoring with Spire

A Spire Case Study

Preview of the OroraTech Case Study

How space-enabled technologies are facilitating enhanced wildfire detection and monitoring capabilities

OroraTech, a Germany‑headquartered provider of thermal sensor networks and the Wildfire Solution platform, faced rapidly growing demand to detect and monitor wildfires more quickly and at global scale. To scale its capability, OroraTech partnered with Spire, deploying the FOREST constellation (FOREST‑1 in Jan 2022 and FOREST‑2 in Jun 2023) built on Spire’s LEMUR 6 bus and planning an eight‑satellite OTC‑P1 rollout in 2025 via Spire’s Space as a Service.

Spire worked with OroraTech to validate and expand on‑orbit processing and onboard detection algorithms that reduce data size and speed delivery of thermal intelligence, doubling FOREST‑2’s swath and enabling alerts within five minutes. The collaboration has produced measurable impact—FOREST‑2’s improved resolution and processing, a NASA JPL contract win, participation in Canada’s WildfireSat study, and plans to scale from ~10 to 100+ satellites to achieve a global 30‑minute revisit rate by 2028—demonstrating Spire’s role in delivering rapid, actionable wildfire monitoring.
