How Oldendorff improved their fuel consumption simulation model with Spire weather data to chart ship courses with lower fuel usage

Oldendorff Carriers, one of the world’s largest dry bulk shippers, faced the challenge of reducing fuel costs and CO2 emissions by integrating weather insights into its fuel consumption model to navigate more efficiently and prepare for IMO 2020 fuel-cost volatility. To meet this goal they partnered with Spire and used Spire Weather data as an input to their vessel performance modelling.

Oldendorff built a vessel digital twin and layered Spire weather forecasts onto every possible route to simulate how currents, waves and wind would affect fuel burn for each voyage. Using Spire, they improved prediction accuracy by 2.51%—making fuel estimates 5.63 times closer over a seven-day period—and produced operational estimates (approximately 5.6 t fuel and 17.5 t CO2 for the evaluated scenario), enabling better route choices and measurable reductions in fuel use and emissions.
