Case Study: ClearMetal, Inc. achieves 31-hour faster port arrival alerts with Spire

A Spire Case Study

Preview of the ClearMetal, Inc. Case Study

How Clearmetal created a machine learning engine to provide Port Alerts 31 hours faster to help optimize operations and costs

ClearMetal, Inc. faced chronic gaps and delays in EDI vessel arrival messages—about 10% of berth calls never appeared in EDI and the remaining arrivals averaged a 36-hour latency—creating major uncertainty in container availability and higher supply-chain costs. To solve this, ClearMetal, Inc. partnered with Spire to fuse traditional EDI with Spire’s satellite AIS data and analytics.

Spire analyzed over 2 billion AIS messages and used unsupervised clustering to map berth locations globally, then cross-checked AIS with EDI to fill missing events and reduce false positives. The result: arrival completeness rose to ~96% and latency fell by 86% to roughly 5 hours (providing port alerts about 31 hours faster), enabling better predictions of container availability and near-port activities and yielding measurable benefits such as 20–50% reductions in detention and demurrage fees.
