How AIS data is refining the way we esti- mate wave loading

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) needed more accurate, vessel-specific estimates of wave loading to better prioritize surveys, detect fatigue and overload risks, and support dry-dock planning. Historically ABS relied on engineering analysis and industry experience using generic historical wave statistics; to capture actual vessel operations it engaged Spire to provide Automatic Identification System (AIS) data for route and position tracking.

Spire supplied AIS position data that ABS matched with corresponding historical wave conditions to produce vessel-specific wave statistics for fatigue and extreme-load analysis. By integrating Spire’s AIS data, ABS improved vessel-specific wave-loading estimates by 30%, developed targeted survey plans for potential overload and fatigue damage, and strengthened dry-dock planning and schedule adherence—enabling more focused inspections and better life‑extension decisions.
