Australian Office of National Intelligence launches experimental AI CubeSat in 6 months with Spire

The Australian Office of National Intelligence (ONI) sought to experiment with commercial satellite technologies and develop advanced on-board machine learning capabilities for a CubeSat. To meet this challenge, ONI partnered with vendor Spire to develop and deploy a satellite under its NICSAT program.

Spire designed, developed, and manufactured a 3U CubeSat named Djara, leveraging its satellite operations expertise and global ground station network. The solution enabled the collection and on-orbit processing of data, which was then downlinked and analyzed using Spire's cloud infrastructure. The satellite was successfully launched and deployed from the International Space Station, providing the Australian National Intelligence Community with a platform to explore the potential applications of small satellite systems.
