Vale Gets Solid Grip on Global Performance and Priorities in Pursuit of Enterprise Risk Management Goals

Vale, one of the world’s largest mining companies and a market leader in iron ore and nickel with roughly 195,000 employees across 30 countries, needed to move from a narrow, insurance-focused approach to a comprehensive Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) program. The company struggled to collect, aggregate and analyze vast amounts of decentralized risk data—relying on hundreds of spreadsheets—and sought a global software partner to standardize risk governance, embed risk practices in daily operations, and streamline workflows; in 2010 Vale selected Sphera and its Stature® software as the foundation for this effort.

Sphera implemented Stature as a centralized, web-based Operational Risk solution to register, analyze, mitigate and monitor enterprise risks, replacing hundreds of spreadsheets with one global risk management information system. The Sphera solution standardized data and workflows, increased transparency and accountability across facilities, produced tailored “heat-map” reporting for decision-makers, and reduced the time to roll up enterprise risk data by up to 99% (from about two hours to two minutes), while helping secure funding for risk control actions.
