U.S. Military Maintenance Facility Improves Hazardous Materials Management

U.S. Military Maintenance Company, a large military maintenance facility responsible for supporting submarine fleet upkeep and distributing roughly $885,000 in hazardous materials to about 90 shops, needed a better way to monitor approximately 1,100 hazardous material types from cradle to grave, cut requisition and waste-disposal costs, and ensure worker safety. The Defense Logistics Agency selected Sphera’s HMMS (Hazardous Material Management System) to meet DoD requirements for waste and material tracking.

Sphera implemented its HMMS material and waste management solution to track inventory, alert on low stock, streamline transfers and decanting, and tighten SDS/version control. As a result, the facility saw a 17% year‑over‑year reduction in requisitions, a 19% drop in containers wasted, greatly faster SDS verification (from ~1 week to 24–48 hours), and time savings in transfer/processing estimated between 466 and 2,800 hours—while maintaining a safer working environment thanks to Sphera’s system.
