Spectra Energy Uses EPASS to Drive Time/Cost Savings on EPA Mandatory Reporting Rule Compliance

Spectra Energy, a Fortune 500 North American pipeline and midstream company, faced the challenge of efficiently collecting, calculating and reporting greenhouse gas (GHG) data to comply with the EPA’s Mandatory Reporting Rule (MRR) while eliminating manual-entry risks and keeping costs low. To meet this need it relied on its Environmental Performance and Safety System (EPASS), built on the Sphera Essential Suite, as the authoritative source for EHS and emissions data.

Using Sphera’s Essential Suite integrated into EPASS, Spectra Energy automated data transfer into the EPA’s e-GGRT system, cutting report preparation from about 32 hours per site to roughly 90 minutes and avoiding the need for costly consultants. The Sphera-enabled solution reduced annual submission costs from an estimated >$110,000 for manual entry to under $5,200 (saving $100,000+ annually), supported reporting for 33 sites, and reinforced the company’s “one version of the truth.”
