A Sphera Case Study
Mercedes-Benz, pursuing its Ambition 2039 to become a carbon‑neutral company across its entire value chain, faced a lack of emissions transparency in its supply chain—particularly for steel, aluminum and plastics—and had limited data on the impacts of renewable energy, recycled or bio‑based materials and CO2 reduction potentials. To address this gap, Mercedes‑Benz engaged Sphera’s Sustainability Consulting services and detailed life cycle assessment (LCA) models.
Sphera performed detailed CO2 modeling of the supply chains for steel, aluminum and plastics, evaluating alternative production routes (e.g., direct reduced iron), renewable energy use and secondary/bio‑based material options while accounting for other environmental impacts where relevant. As a result, Sphera enabled Mercedes‑Benz to gain CO2 transparency across its supply chain, quantify the decarbonization potential of specific strategies (such as renewable energy), and establish, quantify and refine measurable CO2 reduction targets.
