Case Study: Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd achieves SBT-aligned decarbonization and major GHG reductions with Sphera

A Sphera Case Study

Preview of the Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd Case Study

Mahindra’s Decarbonization Pathway Using Science Based Targets (SBTs)

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., the Mumbai-based automotive and farm solutions flagship of the Mahindra Group, sought to set robust Science Based Targets (SBTs) aligned with the Paris Agreement but faced challenges quantifying scope 3 emissions, choosing appropriate target types for its auto and farm businesses, and defining use‑phase assessment methods. To address this, Mahindra engaged Sphera and leveraged Sphera’s Sustainability Consulting Services and LCA GaBi databases to evaluate emissions across scope 1, 2 and 3 and to apply the SBTi and SDA methodologies.

Sphera’s experts helped Mahindra develop a science‑based decarbonization roadmap, calculate a scope 3 baseline using the GaBi databases, support SBTi target setting and validation, and simulate reduction scenarios. As a result, Mahindra committed to SBTi‑reviewed targets that include a 30% reduction in scope 3 GHG emissions by 2033 and a 47% reduction in scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions per equivalent product unit by 2033, aligned with at least a 2°C ambition, while improving transparency and sustainability positioning.
