Eglin Air Force Base Achieves Goal of 100% Compliance With EHS Regulations For Hazardous Materials Management

Eglin Air Force Base, the largest installation in the U.S. Air Force, faced the challenge of managing hazardous materials across 3,450 facilities and complying with stringent federal, state, Air Force and ISO 14001 requirements while minimizing the operational burden on mission-critical activities. To address this, the base implemented Sphera’s Hazardous Material Management System (HMMS) in 2007, deploying it at 95 active material issue points to centralize material and waste data and control authorized-user access.

Using Sphera’s HMMS, Eglin automated material and waste management, tracked more than 8,000 MSDSs and about 140,000 pounds of regulated substances, monitored 691 hazardous waste collection sites and managed 255,952 pounds of waste, and cut document transaction times from hours to minutes. The solution helped Eglin achieve 100% compliance, earn an AFMC “Full Conformance” rating, realize an 87% reuse rate of materials that otherwise would become waste, and deliver measurable reductions in hazardous material use and compliance burden—all driven by Sphera.
