Case Study: Whirlpool achieves lifecycle sustainability insights and hotspot-driven eco-design with Sphera

A Sphera Case Study

Preview of the Whirlpool Case Study

Defining Product Sustainability Hotspots to Enhance Business Opportunities

Whirlpool, a global home appliance manufacturer, needed to quantify the environmental impacts of its products across their full life cycle, integrate environmental KPIs into product development, and identify sustainability hotspots—particularly for refrigerators. To address these challenges the company partnered with Sphera, using Sphera’s Sustainability Consulting and Product Sustainability (GaBi) software and databases.

Sphera developed a parameterized Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) model and an automated eco‑design tool that lets Whirlpool evaluate and monitor product environmental performance, compare alternative scenarios, and pinpoint emissions hotspots. As a result, Whirlpool identified improvement potential across its product portfolio, gained in‑depth knowledge to support a PCR for refrigerators, and uncovered specific opportunities for process improvements and product‑related sustainability communication — all delivered through Sphera’s consulting and GaBi platform.
