Ball Corporation - Customer Case Study

Ball Corporation, a global maker of billions of aluminum beverage cans, needed to identify environmental hotspots, benchmark cans against alternative packaging, and inform its sustainability strategy. To meet this challenge Ball worked with Sphera, using Sphera’s Sustainability Consulting services and the GaBi LCA databases and software, to conduct a peer‑reviewed, multi‑region life cycle assessment covering Europe, the U.S. and Brazil.

Sphera built detailed LCA models, validated by three independent experts to ISO 14040/44, and showed that aluminum cans are the most circular single‑use packaging option in all regions (by MCI scores) and perform well across impact categories. The study gave Ball Corporation measurable pathways to reduce carbon and improve circularity—raising recycled content and recycling rates, pursuing weight optimization and renewable energy in manufacture—and provided a credible benchmark to align strategy and communicate the benefits of aluminum packaging.
