Anadarko Raises Deepwater Drilling Hazard Assessments to Ensure SEMS Compliance, Enable Sustainable Growth

Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, a leading independent oil and gas explorer and producer, faced a sudden need to comply with new U.S. Safety and Environmental Management System (SEMS) rules after the Deepwater Horizon incident. Anadarko needed to formalize hazard identification, streamline drilling permit applications, and reduce operational disruption from loss of experienced staff, so the company selected Sphera’s Stature® software (part of the Sphera Operational Risk Solution) as a web‑based, enterprise hazard assessment platform.

Sphera worked with Anadarko to tailor Stature templates for deepwater drilling and completion, capturing best practices and supporting management of change. The Sphera implementation formalized and standardized hazard assessments, enabled modified permits to be approved within a day versus the three weeks common among peers, sped onboarding by preserving institutional knowledge in templates, and produced a model process now being considered for enterprise‑wide adoption.
