A Specto Technology Case Study
Lane Construction needed a reliable way to monitor the Northeast Boundary Tunnel project in Washington, D.C., where a five-mile wastewater tunnel was being built under densely developed areas to help reduce sewer overflows into the Anacostia River. To support the project, Specto Technology supplied Worldsensing’s IoT remote monitoring solution for close tracking of tunneling risks and ground conditions.
Specto Technology, working with EnTech Engineering, deployed four wireless gateways, dozens of wireless sensors, and a mix of vibrating wire, analog, and tiltmeter nodes to monitor more than 280 locations along the tunnel alignment and nearby structures. The LoRa-based system eliminated the need for roadway trenching, reduced maintenance with battery life of up to nearly five years, and helped keep the tunnel boring machine on schedule, with the NEBT completed in April 2021.
