Department of the Environment - Customer Case Study

The Department of the Environment's Environmental Resources Information Network (ERIN) faced the challenge of manually compiling a massive volume of inconsistently formatted protected area data from multiple state and territory jurisdictions. This labor-intensive process threatened their ability to update the Collaborative Australian Protected Areas Database (CAPAD) in time for the 2014 World Parks Congress. They engaged Spatial Vision to develop automated CAPAD scripts to streamline this complex task.

Spatial Vision developed a series of Python scripts that automatically consolidated the disparate data into a single, standardized database, resolved spatial overlaps, and intersected the information with bioregional data. This solution drastically reduced the time and manual resources required for the biennial update. As a result, Spatial Vision enabled ERIN to complete the CAPAD 2014 database ahead of schedule for its presentation at the World Parks Congress, while also delivering long-term efficiency benefits for future updates.
