Case Study: City of Melbourne improves pedestrian thermal comfort with Spatial Vision

A Spatial Vision Case Study

City of Melbourne - Customer Case Study

The City of Melbourne’s Urban Sustainability Branch faced the challenge of mitigating heat stress for pedestrians by identifying cooler routes through the city during extreme heat events. Spatial Vision was engaged to analyze and map thermal comfort for pedestrian routes using the city’s key spatial datasets.

Spatial Vision designed and built a modular thermal comfort model that incorporated data on canopy cover, surface materials, and the built environment. This solution produced a thermal comfort raster mosaic and a navigable network dataset that identified the most thermally optimal routes for pedestrians. The results highlighted cooler paths for city users and identified hotter areas as opportunities for future urban development and greening initiatives.
