Case Study: Simerics achieves faster CFD analysis and tighter CAD integration with Spatial Corp

A Spatial Corp Case Study

SPATIAL SDKS ENABLE SIMERICS TO DEVELOP INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS

Simerics, Inc., a Bellevue, Washington-based developer of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, needed a way to bridge the gap between CAD models and CFD analysis. Their challenge was that CFD analysts are not CAD users, CAD changes could invalidate analysis work, and CFD requires extracting the fluid volumes inside a 3D model rather than using the manufacturing geometry directly. Simerics turned to Spatial Corp and its ACIS modeling kernel and 3D InterOp translation technology to address these workflow issues.

Spatial Corp helped Simerics build a solution using ACIS, 3D InterOp, and persistent naming to import CAD data from major systems, automatically heal model geometry, and preserve links between CAD and CFD models. The result was tight coupling of analysis with design, expanded CAD format support, and greatly improved cycle time—reducing what could be up to two weeks of rework per design change. With Spatial Corp’s support, Simerics also shortened development time to just six months, and one executive noted that building the solution from scratch would have taken a decade.
