ABB - Customer Case Study

ABB Robotics, the robotics division of ABB, needed a way to power its RobotStudio simulation and offline programming software without taking on the huge effort of building and maintaining its own geometry engine. The challenge was to support accurate 3D robot programming and CAD data import while staying focused on ABB’s core robotics expertise. ABB turned to Spatial Corp and its 3D ACIS Modeler, 3D InterOp Translators, and 3D Defeaturing tools.

Spatial Corp provided the ACIS 3D modeling engine and InterOp CAD translators, enabling ABB to integrate industry-standard geometry and import major CAD formats such as IGES, STEP, VRML, VDAFS, ACIS, and CATIA. The result was faster development, less geometry-management burden, and significant savings versus building the functionality in-house. ABB also reported improved productivity for system integrators and end users, with robot programs that could be generated in minutes instead of hours or days and fewer rework cycles thanks to virtual programming and higher accuracy.
