Large Synoptic Survey Telescope - Customer Case Study

The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) project needed to manage a highly complex telescope design effort across 10 distributed locations while maintaining end-to-end traceability of requirements from science through system and subsystem levels. LSST chose Sparx Systems’ Enterprise Architect to support the modeling and coordination work, alongside the ICONIX Process, as the team faced the challenge of designing a system that would also handle massive nightly data volumes and rapid processing demands.

Using Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect, LSST built shared SysML and UML models, improved traceability, and supported round-trip code engineering across requirements, design, prototype implementation, testing, and integration. The approach helped the team move quickly from requirements to functional prototypes, produce 90,000 lines of code, and create a common, easy-to-understand view of the system, contributing to successful Data Challenges and a strong Concept Design Review.
